Smart Waste Management and Urban Sustainability in Africa
Abstract
Rapid urbanisation in Africa has intensified the challenge of effective waste management, with most cities struggling to manage increasing volumes of municipal solid waste. Traditional waste management systems, characterised by inefficiency, poor collection rates, and unsustainable disposal practices, have led to environmental degradation, public health risks, and socio-economic inequalities. In response, smart waste management systems—driven by digital technologies, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile innovations—are emerging as viable solutions to promote sustainable urbanisation. This study examines the potential of smart waste management systems in addressing urban waste challenges across African cities. Specifically, it explores how technology-driven solutions such as sensor-enabled bins, mobile waste tracking applications, data-driven recycling initiatives, and public-private partnerships can improve waste collection, enhance recycling efficiency, and foster citizen participation. The research draws from secondary data, case studies, and conceptual models to evaluate the opportunities and constraints in deploying smart waste management strategies in resource-constrained African contexts. Findings highlight that while smart technologies can significantly reduce operational inefficiencies and environmental risks, their effectiveness depends on institutional capacity, infrastructure investment, community participation, and supportive policies. The paper argues that integrating smart waste systems into urban planning not only supports sustainability goals but also enhances social inclusion, green job creation, and resilience to climate change.
