Green Spaces and Climate Resilience in Nigerian Cities
Abstract
Nigeria’s urban centres are among the fastest-growing in Africa, with rapid population growth and infrastructure expansion driving significant environmental challenges, particularly in relation to climate change. Rising temperatures, flooding, air pollution, and loss of biodiversity are increasingly threatening urban resilience. In this context, urban green spaces—parks, community gardens, green corridors, and urban forests—play a vital role in mitigating climate risks while enhancing livability. However, Nigerian cities face a critical shortage of planned and well-maintained green infrastructure, undermining their capacity to withstand climate shocks. This study examines the role of urban green spaces in enhancing climate resilience, focusing on selected Nigerian cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Employing a case study approach, the research integrates literature review, urban planning analysis, and stakeholder perspectives to evaluate the ecological, social, and economic benefits of green spaces in mitigating climate impacts. The study explores how green spaces contribute to reducing urban heat islands, managing stormwater, improving air quality, and fostering social cohesion. Findings suggest that while there are growing initiatives—such as Lagos State’s “Greening Lagos Project” and Abuja’s urban forestry efforts—implementation challenges, weak policy enforcement, and pressures from unregulated urbanisation have limited their effectiveness. The study concludes that integrating green spaces into urban planning and governance is essential for building climate-resilient Nigerian cities.
